With the addition of bamboo decorations and colorful tanzaku paper strips featuring people’s wishes, the entire city enchants as they celebrate. The vibrant parades accompanied by traditional music and dancing increase the astounding atmosphere even further; along with elaborate food stalls and a spectacular fireworks display that culminate the festival.
The Art of the Tea Ceremony
In Kainan Hoshi you’ll find little tea houses where the tea ceremony exists as a thoughtful ritual and an incredible glimpse of the cultural depths of Japan. Allow yourself to fully embrace the unmatched tranquility whilst partaking in cake or sweetmeat offered by your host as they whisk matcha for you to drink during the ceremony of ‘chanoyu’.

The grand finale is signified with the breathtaking Fireworks.

A Deep Emotion Tied to the Festival
One of the pieces that stood out the most during my visit to the festival was an elderly couple who together were writing their wishes on a tanzaku. Every year, this couple has never missed an opportunity to celebrate the festival together since their adolescent years. Year after year, they wished for health and happiness because this wonderful tradition meant so much to them. Their love for the festival—and for each other—demonstrated how profoundly the Kainan Hoshi Matsuri forges bonds among people from various ages.
These memories are precisely the most charming bits, and they reveal the essence behind it all – festivities should not only be a cause for joy and laughter, but a united purpose to stand for humanity and hope.
